Council Information
Page for the governing body of the College, its Council, 24 members of which are surgeons from the various specialties elected by postal ballot of fellows and members. There are also representatives from the various College faculties, the main surgical specialist associations, the College's Court of Examiners, and surgeons-in-training. A member of the College's patient liaison group (PLG) also sits on Council to represent the views of patients.
Introduction
The governing body of the College is its Council, 24 members of which are surgeons from the various specialties elected by postal ballot of fellows and members. All 26 members are Trustees of the College and 2 of which are dental surgery fellows elected by the Board of the Faculty of Dental Surgery. There are also invited representatives from the nine surgical specialist associations, the College’s Court of Examiners, the Staff and Associate Specialists Grades, the College of Emergency Medicine and Surgeons-In-Training. A member of the College’s patient liaison group (PLG) also sits on Council to represent the views of patients.
Council is therefore a large body reflecting a range of professional interests but nevertheless acting on behalf of surgery in general. Full Council meets six times a year and Trustees meet three times per year and Meetings are chaired by the President.
The College delegates the co-ordination of a number of its main functions to various boards and committees. The activities of these boards and committees are reported to Council on a regular basis.
