Basic Ilizarov Method course
The course will consist of didactic and an opportunity to discuss cases with the faculty. Particular attention will be paid to the issues that arise when dealing with patients who have a circular fixator. These will be addressed via dedicated tutorial and practical workshops.

The Basic Ilizarov Method course is a multidisciplinary course, aimed at orthopaedic surgery trainees ST2-ST6, and professions allied to medicine, including nursing staff and physiotherapists.
Content
The faculty are knowledgeable and highly experienced Ilizarov users. The course covers the history of the Ilizarov Method; basic principles of wires, pins, rings and frame construction, frame dynamisation and removal; acute fracture management with fine wire fixators, particularly tibial plateau and pilon fractures, open fractures, and segmental fractures; an introduction to distraction osteogenesis; the management of complications of trauma including malunion, non-union and bone infection; and a brief introduction to the Taylor Spatial Frame. Other topics covered include evidence-based pinsite care, physiotherapy for the frame patient, and the Ilizarov Method in children's orthopaedics. The course builds on the basics of ex-fix from the RCS Current Concepts in External Fixation course convened by the same group.
