Amputations

This course is aimed at the multi-professional surgical team who undertake amputations. There will be hands-on sessions and a multidisciplinary faculty of vascular, plastic, orthopaedic, general surgeons, anaesthetists and rehabilitation experts who will cover the techniques of all the amputations from digital amputations to hind quarter.

Amputations are commonly performed procedures. There is a relatively high failure and revision rate for amputations. The functional results can also be improved by well performed amputations. Most amputations are performed in elderly patients with peripheral vascular disease, but occasionally these procedures are required in younger patients with non-salvageable limb injury or tumour. There are a variety of amputation techniques ranging from toe amputation to the rare hind quarter amputation. Traditionally these procedures have been taught on the job, but the changes in training and working hours make it desirable for the principles of these procedures to be taught outside operating theatres. This course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles and techniques of all amputations with the opportunity to practice these cadavers under the supervision of an experienced multi-disciplinary faculty.
