Effective team working is inextricably linked to good leadership. Both skills require training and development. Better team working has the potential to reduce costs, improve service, reduce errors, reduce deaths and increase job satisfaction.

Content
The Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum recognises the essential skills of leadership and team working. SLIPS has been developed to teach all members of the Surgical Theatre team techniques to improve communication and leadership in teams. It also looks at how to reduce the risk of medical errors by introducing theory and research evidence, and creating an understanding of human factors in improving patient safety.
This is a two-day interactive course which combines presentations, case scenarios and interactive facilitated group learning. Sessions covered include:
- Safety facts and leadership for change
- Threat and error management
- Team working and Teams and leaders
- Introduction to Myers-Briggs Type Indicator questionnaire
- Personality, behaviour and self management
- Briefing and debriefing Skills
- Situation awareness and error management
- Decision making
- The power of feedback
- Team working red flag awareness
- Human performance and limitations
- Review of case studies
Format
The course will combine presentations and interactive facilitated group learning.
