Emergency Surgery for the On-call General Surgeon

The aim of this course is to teach and remind general surgeons, whatever their sub-specialty interest, the skills necessary to manage life threatening emergencies out of hours. It will update experienced general surgeons in the management of a wide range of emergency surgical conditions and to stimulate discussion in controversial areas of patient management.

STs 5-8 and consultants in general surgery wishing to update their knowledge and skills in emergency surgical care.

Content

The programme for this course will include:

  • Physiology of the critically ill
  • Strategies for high quality emergency patient care
  • Surgical treatment of trauma including stab and bullet wounds, head injuries, splenic injuries
  • Management of common emergencies
  • Serious but uncommon situations
  • Diagnostic investigations of the acute abdomen
  • Timing of operations to balance urgency versus specialist needs
  • Ethical decisions for emergency surgeons
