Emergency Surgery for the On-call General Surgeon
The aim of this course is to teach and remind general surgeons, whatever their sub-specialty interest, the skills necessary to manage life threatening emergencies out of hours. It will update experienced general surgeons in the management of a wide range of emergency surgical conditions and to stimulate discussion in controversial areas of patient management.

Content
The programme for this course will include:
- Physiology of the critically ill
- Strategies for high quality emergency patient care
- Surgical treatment of trauma including stab and bullet wounds, head injuries, splenic injuries
- Management of common emergencies
- Serious but uncommon situations
- Diagnostic investigations of the acute abdomen
- Timing of operations to balance urgency versus specialist needs
- Ethical decisions for emergency surgeons
