Regional Advisors

Within each region the Faculty is represented by a regional advisor, who:

• promotes the Faculty’s policies, activities, training courses and examinations;
• acts as a local point of contact for consultants and specialists, regardless of their individual specialties, and to notify the Faculty of any matters of particular interest or concern;
• maintains the Faculty's links with the region's postgraduate medical and dental deans, specialty advisors, training programme directors, educational supervisors and fellows;
• represents the Faculty and the dental specialties at meetings of the local Professional Affairs Boards;
• encourages trainees to achieve appropriate College diplomas to facilitate eligibility and preparation for sitting College exams.

Specialty Advisors

Specialty advisors are appointed to each region to provide specialty-specific advice. These advisors:

• promote the Faculty’s policies, activities, training courses and examinations.
• consult with the regional advisor where appropriate on all relevant specialty matters
• promote high standards in their relevant specialty

Both regional and specialty advisors may:

• inspect and approve job descriptions for NHS or honorary consultants and specialty dentists.
• serve as Faculty assessor on appointment committees.
• serve on appropriate regional committees, for example Specialist Training Committees (STCs)

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)

The Faculty has agreed that in future it will be represented in matters relating to oral and maxillofacial surgery by the College's OMFS Regional Specialty Professional Advisors (RSPAs): RSPAs are nominated by BAOMS and jointly approved by both the College Council and the Board of Faculty.

On all matters involving OMFS, in particular job descriptions, person specifications and advisory appointments committees for consultant posts in OMFS, the OMFS RSPA should report to and liaise with the College’s Faculty of Dental Surgery through its local Regional Adviser.

A transitional phase currently exists as we move from the old system to the new. In some instances they will exist side by side, an OMFS specialty advisor and an OMFS RSPA. In these instances regional advisors should forward OMFS job descriptions for approval to the OMFS specialty advisors.

In some cases the OMFS specialty advisor will serve in both roles until their appointment as specialty advisors comes to an end, at which point BAOMS will instigate a replacement process.

Regional and Specialty Advisors Meeting 2013

The Faculty holds an annual meeting for its regional and specialty advisors at the College to discuss important issues and to swap views. The next meeting will take place on Friday 22 March 2013. The programme has now been finalised and we are pleased to announce that amongst our speakers will be Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, the Medical Director of NHS England and National Commissioning Board for England. Attendance is limited and by invitation only.
