Education

The need for surgeons to possess detailed anatomical knowledge and highly developed manual dexterity makes surgical education unique in medicine. The College provides training courses for surgeons at every stage in their career to ensure they have the necessary skills to conduct complex operations safely.

These range from basic courses in surgical skills, such as suturing for surgical trainees, to masterclasses for senior consultants. We need to:

  • develop educational courses in line with advancing technology and knowledge
  • train surgeons in new procedures
  • maintain state-of-the-art teaching facilities in which to train surgeons
  • secure leading experts to teach young surgeons
  • expand our overseas programmes to raise clinical standards abroad.

If you would like information on some of the surgical education projects that currently need funding, please email Nigel Davies ndavies@rcseng.ac.uk or, if you prefer telephone him on 020 7869 6081.

Training

Women in Surgery (WinS) organises a range of activities and as part of the Opportunities in Surgery initiative aims to:

  • To raise the profile of women in surgery
  • To work towards an understanding of the issues facing women in surgery
  • To encourage attitudinal change ensuring women are seen as an integral part of the profession
  • To provide advice, guidance and pastoral support for those women already in surgery or considering entering it
  • To support the WinS network

They continue to run workshops for schools and promote surgery as a career choice for women medical students. The WinS newsletter, which is published three times a year, provides a valuable forum for discussion, advice and networking.

In addition the WinS Annual Conference provides an opportunity for women of all stages, from medical school onwards, to meet; network; attend workshops; and hear talks.

All of the WinS activities require charitable funding or sponsorship. For further details, please contact the
Development Office.
