This section provides information for both clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and local education and training boards (LETBs) as education and training is vital for successful service delivery and safe effective surgical care.
The College's role is to set standards and support education through courses and examinations as well as workplace based surgical training against the surgical curriculum. We also quality assure events and courses and also accredit post-CCT fellowships.
The Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST) is an advisory body to the four surgical Royal Colleges of the UK and Ireland for all matters related to surgical training and works closely with the Surgical Specialty Associations in Great Britain and Ireland. The JCST is the parent body for all Specialty Advisory Committees (SACs) responsible for surgical specialties.
Health Education England is the new body set up to oversee the commissioning and delivery of health education across all specialties.
At the local level, LETBs are responsible for the training and education of NHS staff, both clinical and non-clincical, within their area.
The College has an established regional infrastructure to support the delivery of postgraduate training and education, underpinned by its regional representatives.
