Examinations suite

We are pleased to be able to offer exams in person again in our bespoke exam suite on the first floor. We run an extensive range of postgraduate exams for surgical and dental professionals at every stage of their career.

How many examination rooms are there?
There are two standalone 14-station circuits, which can be opened up to create a single 28-station circuit.

Where do briefings take place?
Briefings for candidates take place in the circuit briefing rooms, which form part of the exam suite, and in the Erasmus Wilson room for examiners.

Bjorn Saven Centre (BSC)

The Bjorn Saven Centre (BSC) encompasses a variety of facilities for modern surgical and healthcare related teaching. It is an exclusive space that provides flexible opportunities for delivering everything from professional development events to bespoke, tissue-based, skills training.

How many rooms does the BSC have?
There are four main spaces within the BSC: reception, breakout room, seminar room and the skills lab. However, there are additional facilities available within the College, such as the Examinations Suite on the first floor and The View on the sixth floor.

Members’ Library and Research Room

The Members’ Library and Research Room on the first floor are now open for use.

When are opening times?
Opening times are 10am–5pm, Tuesday to Thursday.

Is booking required?
No booking is required for the Library, but please speak to reception on arrival and they can direct you. 

Booking is essential for the Research Room and please allow enough time to arrange your visit so we can ensure material is available.

Can anyone use the Members’ Library and Research Room?
The Members’ Library provides a comfortable space for study and research for all members and fellows of the College.

Anyone wishing to use our Research Room is welcome to use our collections for their research. 

Members and Fellows' Lounge

We are excited to announce the new Members and Fellows’ Lounge. This lovely space, exclusive to members and fellows, is simply for relaxation and to spend time with your peers.

Where is it located?

The lounge is on the ground floor of the College.

Is booking required?

You do not need to book to visit the lounge. Please visit reception for a day pass to access the lounge. 

Can anyone use the Members and Fellows’ Lounge?

Only members and fellows can access the lounge.

What kind of facilities are included in the space?

The lounge has plush sofas and comfy chairs.

Lumley Library and Erasmus Wilson Room

A historical space on the first floor features the Lumley Library and Erasmus Wilson Room. The Lumley Library, as well as an evening event space is also a fully functioning library. By the close of the 19th century, it was widely recognised that the Royal College of Surgeons possessed one of the finest medical science library collections in Europe.

The View

The View boasts wonderful views of the city at the rear, and Lincoln’s Inn Fields at the front. The View comprises meeting rooms, conference facilities and a terrace. It can be used to meet with staff, colleagues and visitors, and can also double up to host both large events and private functions.

Café

We have a café situated near the Portugal Street entrance, where you can meet colleagues for a catch up over coffee or find a quiet spot to do some work.

When are opening times?
8am–2pm.

What is on offer in the café?
The café has a selection of delicious breakfast treats, soups, sandwiches, cakes and pastries. We also offer an array of drinks, including tea, coffee and juices.

Anatomy and Pathology Museum

The Anatomy and Pathology Museum (APM) holds 1,500 specimens on open display for self-study and learning, as well as skeletal handling collections. It is open to a wide range of medical and healthcare professionals and trainees.
Entry is free for individuals and small groups of 9 or fewer.

What are opening times?
Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm (excluding bank holidays.)

Hunterian Museum

The Hunterian Museum has at its heart the anatomy and pathology collections of the 18th-century surgeon and anatomist John Hunter. The Hunterian Museum holds unrivalled collections of human and non-human anatomical and pathological specimens, models, instruments, painting and sculptures.

When will the Hunterian Museum reopen?
The museum will open again to the public in early 2023.

Regional and global support

Our global team supports surgeons and their teams in 90 countries from Australia to Ethiopia, whilst our outreach team, who have offices in both Manchester and London, work to connect members from all four nations of the UK.

How will you support members who can’t come to the building?
We will be providing more opportunities and support for our members across the UK and internationally. This includes developing our digital offers and expanding our regional and global networks to ensure that our members, wherever they are, can access the best training, development and support.
