Borrowing books

Information on borrowing books from the College library and the inter-library loan service.

Loans from the College library to individuals

Books can be borrowed from the College library, subject to lending policy, by the following individuals:

  • Members and fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of England
  • Diplomates of the Faculty of Dental Surgery
  • Diplomates of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK)
  • Affiliates of the College
  • Surgical and dental trainees registered for College exams
  • College staff
The Library

To borrow books you must be a member of the library; see the Who can use the library page for details.

A fine system is in operation for overdue items. This has been introduced to encourage the prompt return of items and to improve access to our most popular texts, especially during busy periods prior to College exams.

When the library is closed please return items to the Porter's desk located at the Nuffield entrance to the College.

Individual members of the library are also able to reserve items that may currently be on loan to another user; this is a free service. Members can reserve items online (PIN required) or in person. Email the library to request your login details.

Please contact the library if you would like to know more about borrowing eligibilities, loan periods and renewals, reservations, or any other related issues.

Loans from other libraries

Books and monographs not held by the College library can be borrowed from other libraries through the College library on inter-library loan; this service is only available to UK-based Diplomates of the College.

Costs will vary depending on the library concerned, but are likely to be between £3.75 and £8.00 plus return postage. All borrowing conditions (ability to extend the loan and if so whether a charge applies, whether an item can be consulted outside the College library, whether recorded delivery is required for return of items, etc) will also depend on the policies of the lending library.

Please contact the library if you would like to use this service.

It may be advisable for individuals who are members of associations such as the British Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine to approach them directly for loans.
