RCS response to Department of Health announcement of review into medical training under EWTD

We are relieved that one of the lunacies of EWTD has finally dawned on the Department of Health. The college has spoken out, since 2002, about the deleterious effect the EU limit on working hours will have on both patient safety and surgeons’ training.

While we are pleased that the evidence we continue to provide has finally driven Department of Health to begin to look at this in depth and to begin to acknowledge the serious implications for surgical services and training – with just two months to go before the August deadline it is too little too late to avert serious disruption to surgery in the NHS
