John Black, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, said:
“This important report on hospital intravenous nutrition from NCEPOD shows how an important aspect of care for some of the most vulnerable patients in hospital has been largely overlooked. For surgeons this report should act as a spur to ensure that plans for post-operative nutrition of patients are routinely discussed at multi-disciplinary team meetings. As the study makes clear, the decision to feed patients in this way carries risks and the Royal College of Surgeons will take these recommendations and study what further implications there are for surgery.”
