20 doctors from Bahrain who treated people injured in a protest have been convicted of incitement to overthrow the regime and sentenced to a maximum of 15 years each. Professor Norman Williams, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, said:
“There can be no doctor anywhere in the world who isn’t deeply shocked to hear of the prison sentences handed down to medical staff in Bahrain. The apparent interpretation of offering medical treatment as an act of insurrection sets a worrying precedent. Offering medical care to those who need it goes to the heart of what being a doctor is. I join colleagues from across the global medical community in condemning these convictions and calling on the Bahraini authorities to reconsider this decision.”
