Answers to the most commonly asked questions by our visitors, such as how to get the most out of a visit, how to find the museum from Holborn tube station, and where to find a cup of tea and a bun.
The Hunterian Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free and the museum is open to all.
The Museum and the College of Surgeons close annually for Good Friday, Easter Saturday and from Christmas Eve to New Years Day inclusive, reopening on the first working day.
Entry to Hunterian Museum for people who are wheelchair users or have a mobility problems that prevent them from climbing steps is through the entrance at the Nuffield College of Surgical Sciences building to the left of the main college where there is a wheelchair lift.
These buildings are linked internally by a direct level route with no stairs.

The Hunterian Museum is located inside The Royal College of Surgeons of England, 35-43 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE
All groups must book in advance. Admission is free but a donation of £3 per person is encouraged.
There is a free curator led, guided tour every Wednesday at 1pm. The tour is open to everyone but places are limited to 25 people and advance booking is recommended. This tour is open to individuals and small groups up to a maximum of 5 people. Call 020 7869 6560 to reserve places.
Talk of the day
Museum volunteers regularly deliver free talks in the Hunterian Museum. These cover a wide range of subjects relating to the museum collections and the history of surgery. They include:
- Anatomy of A Hanging by Mr Richard Pusey, FRCS
- A night with Venus, a lifetime with Mercury by Mr Tim Guerrier, FRCS
- The Wretched Child in Hunter's Time by Professor Lewis Spitz, FRCS

The museum cannot guarantee that a specific talk will be available on the day of your visit so please phone the museum before you travel to find out what is on that day. Call 020 7869 6560.
Curator led tours for groups
Tours of the museum can be booked for up to 30 people:
- A 30-minute tour is £100 plus VAT.
- A 45-minute tour is £150 plus VAT.
- Tours for UK schools (KS3-KS5) are free, but donations of £3 per student are encouraged.
- Tours for FE/HE groups are 25% discount (£75 for 30 mins or £112.50 for 45 mins) plus VAT.
The museum is available to hire for evening receptions in conjunction with the other facilities on offer in the College. For more information please contact the Facilities department on 020 7869 6702 or visit the venue hire section.
The MacRae Gallery can be reserved for teaching sessions, practical demonstrations or workshops, as well as seminars and small symposia. The room is suitable for away days, staff training workshops, business development meetings and team building activities.
The MacRae Gallery is available to hire from 8.30am to 6pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The cost is £350 per day. The gallery can be hired on its own and in conjunction with other facilities across the College.
This includes a projector, microscopes, measuring and handling equipment. Bench space can also be reserved for up to four people. Please contact the museum on 020 7869 6560 for more information.
