The Royal College of Surgeons has teamed up with EIDO Healthcare to promote patient consent and communication through the endorsement of the EIDO library of 300 detailed surgical information leaflets.
The leaflets, which are used by around 40% of NHS hospitals, are designed to be used alongside a consultation to help patients consider the risks, benefits and alternatives to procedures in order to make informed decisions about their treatment. They can also be taken away and re-read before an operation, helping to target conversation about concerns and subsequently shortening consultation times and reducing calls to the hospital.
As part of the partnership, EIDO will provide the RCS with a package of summary content covering 175 operations, specifically designed for the College's website and accessible to Members.
Professor Norman Williams, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, said:
"Most surgeons and hospitals provide patients with leaflets to explain what treatment is proposed, but evidence and guidelines can change frequently. By taking away the worry of maintaining revisions and providing a consistent and clear writing style the EIDO leaflets save time, reduce medico-legal risks and ensure that patients are aware of the risks and benefits of surgery. It is for these reasons we are happy to endorse EIDO’s library and provide access to summary versions on the RCS website as a membership benefit"
Owain Tudor, Head of Product Development at EIDO, said:
"One of EIDO's key objectives has always been to promote the use of good quality, clear patient information to support informed consent - for the benefit of patients and surgeons. This endorsement shows the College's willingness to work with EIDO to reduce medico-legal risk and improve patient safety."
