RCS launches online 'Surgeons' Portfolio' to support surgeons in revalidation

08 December 2011

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) is today launching a refreshed online Surgeons' Portfolio system to help surgeons meet the General Medical Council’s requirements for appraisal and medical revalidation.

Developed by the RCS and its sister colleges in Scotland and Ireland, the secure website aims to provide a straightforward system for surgeons to bring together in one place the data they need to provide for appraisal and revalidation purposes including: clinical outcomes data, audit details, professional development activities and feedback from patients.

The system has been designed with the guidance of the surgical speciality associations and provides the facility to control the information that surgeons collect, manage and report. It also incorporates the well-established Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh elogbook.

From late 2012, all surgeons must provide information on the quality of their professional practice at their annual appraisal and for revalidation. Revalidation aims to improve patient safety, quality of care and patients’ experience by ensuring doctors are up to date and fit to practice. The portfolio aims to streamline the revalidation process so that surgeons’ time away from delivering frontline care is minimised.

Professor Norman Williams, President of the Royal College of Surgeons, said:

“After two years of piloting, the Royal College of Surgeons, along with our sister surgical colleges in Scotland and Ireland, are pleased to announce the launch of the Surgeons’ Portfolio. This is an invaluable tool for surgeons recording information relevant to their appraisal and revalidation. Designed by surgeons for surgeons, it is easy to access and straightforward to use.”

The Surgeons’ Portfolio is fully compliant with data protection requirements and those of the Information Commissioner’s Office and is provided free-of-charge to members of the participating colleges. It is also supported by a Helpdesk.

Access for RCS fellows and members is via the membership area of the College’s website and involves a single log-in mechanism. Once completed, the user will be able to enter the portfolio via the membership portal without needing to complete an additional log-in.

The colleges intend to continue to develop the Surgeons’ Portfolio, adding new features and refining existing ones. Surgeons who wish to give feedback on the system are encouraged to email the Helpdesk.
