Overview

Good Surgical Practice provides standards that are achievable by all surgeons and which can be used to confirm good practice. The 2008 edition updates the text and references of the original version written in 2001 and merges it with practical guidance on the types of evidence and information that can be used to demonstrate these standards.

This version of Good Surgical Practice also takes into account the 2006 revision of Good Medical Practice, the General Medical Council’s guidance on the principles and values on which good practice is founded. Good Surgical Practice, like Good Medical Practice, is not a statutory code. Instead, it provides guidance that will allow surgeons to use their own professional judgement to apply its principles in practice.

The 2008 edition of Good Surgical Practice has received endorsements from the nine SAC-defined Specialty Associations, as well as The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

We welcome feedback on any resources you feel should be included in the web version to complement the guidance provided in the document. Please send your suggestions to: psd@rcseng.ac.uk
