Support for Surgeons

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is committed to assisting all surgeons who find themselves in need of professional advice and support, or who are faced with disciplinary action. Talking through difficulties at an early stage may help to clarify issues, alleviate anxiety, reduce the sense of isolation and point the way to a solution. There are also opportunities for mentoring schemes, help for international doctors and improving working lives.

Careers Advice

You will need to pass through a number of stages to succeed in your career in surgery. The careers advice section is designed to guide you through the process of creating your CV and attending interviews.

Mentoring

The concept of mentoring is inherent in the College publication 'Good Surgical Practice' (2002). The College supports the concept of mentoring and is currently looking into how it can best support and promote mentoring schemes for surgeons at all stages of their career.

Opportunities in Surgery

The College's Opportunities in Surgery initiative aims to encourage diversity among surgeons, so that our future surgical workforce will represent the community it serves.

Improving Working Lives

Improving Working Lives (IWL) is an initiative from the Department of Health that sets standards to promote a healthy work-life balance for all NHS employees. The College hosts an Intercollegiate IWL Committee, which meets on a quarterly basis to discuss the specific IWL needs of all doctors. Information about the IWL initiative and the work of the Committee, including the role of the IWL Champion for Doctors, Mr Eric Waters.
