The Rosetrees Essay Prize 2009
In March 2009 the College, supported by the Rosetrees Trust, announced the launch of a new prize for Surgical Research Fellows.
The winning essays below were selected from a field of 25 applicants in answer to the following question: ‘Describe how your research project will contribute to improvements in patient care within the next five years.’
1st Prize: Mr Sherif Awad MRCS: 'Investigating the mechanisms that underlie the development of perioperative insulin resistance - the effects of starvation and carbohydrate loading on mitochondrial function'
Runner Up: Mr Antonios Kourliouros MRCS: 'Inflammation, structural remodelling and the role of statins in atrial fibrillation following cardiac surgery'
Runner Up: Mr James Tysome FRCS: 'Head and neck cancer therapy with Vaccinia virus encoding angiogenesis inhibitor'
Sherif, Antonios and James were awarded their prizes at the College Diplomates’ Ceremony on Tuesday 07 July 2009 and we congratulate them on their achievement.
