Resources for Trainees

The College is committed to support surgeons and trainees throughout their careers. Below you will find a number of sources of support for trainees which we hope you will find useful.

Affiliates

The College’s Affiliate scheme provides a way in which students and trainees can begin a relationship with the College while pursuing their surgical careers.

As an Affiliate you will receive a huge range of benefits, including careers support and advice, career development events tailored specifically to your needs, and access to our library services and e-journals.

You can join as an Affiliate if you are a medical or dental student studying at a UK university or a foundation, core surgical or dental trainee who has not yet passed their MRCS or MJDF/MFDS.

Wellcome Museum

The Wellcome Museum houses the College’s collection of anatomy and pathology specimens. It contains a modern anatomical and pathological teaching collection and is open to qualified practitioners and students on recognised courses, in medicine, nursing and allied health subjects, and related scientific/technical subjects.

Full information about the collections, visiting and events are available from the Wellcome Museum’s pages

Library and Information Services

The College Library provides a range of services you may find useful, visit the Library pages for more information.

Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme (ISCP)

Throughout their training surgical trainees in all specialties follow a curriculum which provides the framework for systematic training from completion of the foundation years through to consultant level in the UK.

The ISCP website houses the curriculum for the nine surgical specialties and, in a secure area, trainees’ electronic portfolios and the learning agreements which support training.

Careers Support

The Careers section provides information about everything to do with careers in surgery from school students right through to retirement.

Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST)

The JCST is an advisory body to the four surgical Royal Colleges of the UK and Ireland for all matters related to surgical training and works closely with the specialist surgical associations in the UK and Ireland. It is the parent body for all Specialty Advisory Committees (SACs) responsible for each of the surgical specialties.
