Surgical Awards and Grants
The research and grants department of the College exists to promote and protect the interests of patients by maintaining and enhancing professional standards in surgery. Over many years, fellows of the College have extended the frontiers of surgery through clinical research and the development of new operative techniques. In the last ten years the College, through the Research Fellowships Scheme, has committed more than £8.5 million to support over 250 individual trainee surgeons working in university departments and hospitals throughout the country. We need to continue to raise money to fund them in the future. For, although there are between 12 and 15 awarded annually, the number and quality of applications continues to rise. Three-year research training fellowships, jointly funded with the Medical Research Council (MRC) have continued to be an outstanding success, with awards made to one young surgeon each year.
