Membership of the College

Information on how to become a Member or Fellow of the college without an examination.

Fellowship without Examination

There are three ways of becoming a Fellow of this College without examination. Honorary Fellowship is given to a limited number of individuals of outstanding academic merit, or other outstanding contributions to the profession.  Those who receive this accolade are usually world recognised figures in their particular specialty. Recommendations for Honorary Fellowship have to come from a member of the College Council.

Fellowship by Election is given also to individuals of outstanding international merit, many of whom are not surgically qualified. We have a number of pathologists, anaesthetists, radiologists and physicians in this category.

The third method of obtaining Fellowship is by Fellowship ad eundem, and nominations are made by Fellows of the College. Fellows ad eundem have all the rights and privileges of other Fellows, and do have to pay the Annual Statutory Subscription. Candidates should be on the Specialist Register or have passed the FRCS Intercollegiate Specialty Examination. Fellowship ad eundem means of equal standing. It gives all the attendant privileges, rights and responsibilities as fellows by examination, including the eligibility to become members of the College’s Court of Examiners and to stand for election to Council. As with fellows by examination there is an Annual Statutory Subscription to pay.  In order to obtain this fellowship a letter of nomination from another Fellow of this College should be sent to the Membership & Events Department together with your CV.

Membership without Examination

Candidates who have passed the Intercollegiate MRCS examination and subsequently joined another College can become a Member of this College. The Membership which can be bestowed is called Membership ad eundem which means of equal standing. It gives all the attendant privileges, rights and responsibilities as members by examination including selecting this College to grant your Fellowship following the FRCS Intercollegiate Specialty Examination. As with members by examination there is an Annual Statutory Subscription to pay. In order to obtain this membership a letter of nomination from a Fellow of this College should be sent to the Membership & Events Department together with your CV.

All nominations are considered by the Fellowship Election and Prize Committee. Terms of Reference.
