GMC Sponsorship Scheme

All doctors working in the UK need to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and have licence to practice. The RCS is able to support international surgeons with GMC registration by supplying the GMC with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

If you have a formal offer letter for a job at ST3 or above and would like to apply for sponsorship, please complete our GMC Sponsorship Enquiry Form and we will contact you to advise you of the next steps to take.

We will support you throughout at process to ensure that your application can be made swiftly and smoothly as possible.

Before you apply please ensure that you meet the following criteria:

  • you have a formal offer letter of a post at ST3 or above
  • you meet the English Language Requirements set by the GMC specifically pertaining to the Sponsorship Route
    • if you are a national of, and received your Primary Medical Qualification in a country where the GMC considers English to be the “first and native language” you do not need to provide any evidence of your proficiency of the English language
    • if you do not meet this criteria, you will need to provide and IELTS (Academic) or OET (Medicine) certificate with the required scores. For IELTS (Academic) this is a score of at least 7.5 overall and scores of no less than 7.0 in each subsection of the test, and for OET (Medicine) you need to achieve B's across the test
