Dental CBCT Course Level 1 (core) training

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is increasingly common in hospital and general dental practice. This course is based on the Level 1 (core) training criteria published in the latest UK Dental Guidance Notes and aims to help participants fulfill their legal and ethical responsibilities. The course is hosted by RCS England and the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, and is delivered by experienced consultant dental maxillofacial radiologists.

Suitability

This course is suitable for anyone who has attended an IRMER course within the past five years, this includes dentists and also dental nurses who have a NEBDN certificate in dental radiography.  Dentists will need to complete  this Level 1 course before taking  Level 2 training.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • describe what CBCT scans are and their role in diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • explain the basic principles and limitations of CBCT imaging.
  • discuss the differences between 2D and 3D imaging.
  • explain the risks of CBCT and describe how to minimize radiation risks to the patient (radiation protection, optimization). 
  • discuss the responsibilities of a CBCT referrer with regard to clinical information for justification purposes. 
  • explain what clinical and disease conditions would and would not benefit from CBCT imaging (selection criteria).
  • recognize normal anatomy of the teeth and supporting structures.
  • recognise the more common imaging artifacts. 
  • explain who should provide a radiological report. 
  • discuss the contents of a radiologist's report, and its influence on patient treatment. 
  • explain why guidelines are important, and have an understanding of a dentist’s legal and ethical responsibilities in their various roles of being Referrer, Practitioner and Operator.

Learning Outcomes

Format

The Level 1 and Level 2 Dental CBCT courses are both delivered by experienced consultant dental maxillofacial radiologists.

·         This course is jointly hosted by the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR) and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The BSDMFR is a specialist dental society, whose primary aim is to promote the advancement of education in dental and maxillofacial diagnostic imaging. Although a small society, membership includes all practising UK dental maxillofacial radiologists and dental radiographers.

·         The course will be delivered by consultant dental maxillofacial radiologists experienced in dental education. Upon completion of Level 1, dentists  will be eligible to apply for the Level 2  course Basics of dento-alveolar CBCT interpretation. BSDMFR will be organising and delivering this course and participants are thus advised to contact them directly at suk.ng@kcl.ac.uk.

CBCT

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is increasingly common in hospital and general dental practice. Dentists need further training in order to fulfil their legal and ethical responsibilities.

This course is based on the “Level 1” training criteria published in the latest UK Dental Guidance Notes . It has been designed for those dentists who have already attended an IRMER course within the past 5 years.

Applicants are encouraged to consult the SEDENTEX website for some pre-course self-learning (Powerpoint slides with audio tracks) prior to attending.

Course content

  • Basic principles and limitations of CBCT imaging, justification, CBCT referral criteria, radiation protection, doses and risks, concept of the imaging chain, regulations and guidelines.
  • Differences between 2D and 3D imaging, recognising anatomy and disease of the teeth and their supporting structures in CBCT images
  • Who should provide a radiological report, understanding a radiologist’s report, influence on patient treatment.
