Systematic Training in Acute Illness Recognition and Treatment for Surgery (START Surgery)

START Surgery is an engaging one-day course designed for foundation doctors and medical students to advance their skills in managing acutely unwell surgical patients.

Even those with little existing surgical experience will benefit from a blend of practical workshops, data analysis, interactive lectures, and eLearning.

Upon completion, you will be able to identify critically ill surgical patients and demonstrate a systematic approach to assessing surgical patients.

Suitability

START Surgery has been developed primarily for FY1 doctors who will be working on a surgical unit during their foundation year.

You will also find START Surgery beneficial if you are:

  • A final year medical student about to begin your FY1 rotations
  • An FY2 doctor revising your skills before applying for core surgical training posts 
  • Contemplating a career in an acute specialty, anaesthetics or ICM
  • Considering applying for the Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) programme
  • An advanced nurse practitioner, surgical care practitioner or other member of the extended surgical team.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this course, you should be able to: 

  • Begin to identify and manage critically ill surgical patients effectively
  • Be able to demonstrate a systematic approach to assessing surgical patients
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of critical illnesses following surgery
  • Benefit from improved teamwork skills when managing a critically ill patient 
 

Format

START Surgery begins with a series of pre-course e-learning modules.

The course itself is led by experienced surgeons and involves small group workshops – where you will assess clinical cases, analyse data and role-play simulated clinical scenarios – and short interactive lectures.

After the course you will also be required to complete a post course assessment and online course evaluation.

Course content

You will participate in a variety of practical training sessions during the START Surgery course, including:

  • Introduction to a system of patient assessment to facilitate data collection and planning
  • The pathophysiology and recognition of clinical abnormalities in patients with respiratory, renal, circulatory and septic problems
  • Case-based discussion and analysis of real clinical situations
  • General considerations of the professional responsibilities and roles of the foundation trainee within the surgical team
  • Advice on the mindset and skills needed to be a strong foundation trainee and for a future career in surgery 

At the end of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance, which helps to demonstrate your commitment to, and interest in, a career in surgery.
