Get involved: Emerging Leaders

In March 2021 we published the findings of the Kennedy Review, which looked into the diversity of the leadership of the surgical profession and of the College.

The Emerging Leaders recommendation is fundamentally about building on an existing initiative but with renewed vision and purpose to ensure that we are providing support in the right way to the right people.

Individuals from diverse backgrounds and with diverse opinions and beliefs gain leadership roles within the profession, both inside and outside of RCS England governance structures. When in those roles or governance structures, for these individuals to be able to engage, be themselves, feel that they belong and have equal status to all their colleagues.

Emerging Leaders vision

We want this work to focus on

  1. Access: There is materially increased access for diverse leaders to gain leadership positions in the profession.
  2. Confidence and competence: Diverse leaders enhance their confidence and competence in order to take on leadership positions in the profession.
  3. Ecosystem: the growing network and cohorts of diverse leaders influence and change the environment.

What you will see from us next

A new, refreshed Emerging Leaders programme for 2022.

Further interventions and networks from 2023, focused on strengthening the pipeline into leadership roles.
