Making the most of our e-books collection

Starting out?
E-books, like all our other e-resources, are available via the Library web pages. They can be accessed from anywhere in the UK or overseas. Your starting point is to sign into the RCS website with your College login. If you have any questions about this part of the process, send us an email.
Focused searching
Once you’ve logged in, visit SurgiCat+, our online catalogue, to find and access over 800 e-books. Use the first drop-down list next to the search box or the search filters on the left-side of the results page to focus on online material. Like e-journals, e-books are easy to get to: click on the green ‘Online Access’ button for the link to full text and click on the grey bar with the green question mark for help.
The titles are frequently updated with the latest editions and newer content. The Library has just completed work on making our e-book records as current as the ClinicalKey website itself. This means that what appears in our catalogue will fully reflect availability in ClinicalKey. We will continue to update our records monthly as new content comes in.
Browsing
If you prefer to browse through ClinicalKey, you can access the whole suite of features within it, including the e-books, by going straight to the main page and accessing all the e-book content via a search.
ClinicalKey contains e-books covering a wide-range of surgical and medical subject matter. There are helpful features within the website, such as a way of tracking CPD and easily accessing content you’ve previously consulted. To get the most from ClinicalKey, register for your personal account (PDF), which is straightforward and will not need to be done again. This will only take a moment, but will save you effort in the long run.
What’s popular with fellow members?
Thus far in 2018 RCS Members have consulted 479 different books on ClinicalKey, and the total number of downloads of chapter PDF files and content views is well over nine thousand. The top ten most-used titles are as follows:

In summary
- There are no special viewing requirements to use our e-books in ClinicalKey.
- In terms of downloading options, you can register a personalised account to download available chapter PDF files and save content by bookmarking it for later access.
- Personalisation is not required to email page links and print content; these options can be accessed from the icons at the top right of the chapter page or by hovering over the titles on the results list.
- There are also citation export options that cover BibTeX, RIS and text, and you can export citation and abstract or just citation as you wish.
Overall, our e-books collection in ClinicalKey is extremely user-friendly, up to date and relevant, and we hope our members continue to enjoy the advantages and ease of use it offers.
