Closure of Hunterian Museum 2017-2020

Transforming Surgery for Tomorrow

We are currently in the early stages of a major redevelopment of our London home in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. From February 2017 the RCS museums will begin a process of closures, with all collections being removed from the building by summer 2017.

The Hunterian Museum will be the last public area to close, with permanent collections in the main galleries remaining on display until 20 May 2017. Our final exhibition will be Transplant and Life which will be open until 20 May. Key project dates.

During the closure of the 35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields building, we plan to work with partner institutions and heritage organisations to provide managed access to our collections for study and research. We intend to run outreach events on the themes of surgical and medical history, for schools, families and adults, and we will continue our surgery for schools sessions.

We look forward to re-opening in Summer 2020 with a new building and exciting new spaces that will allow greater public access for all visitors to discover the past, present and future of surgery.

Group Bookings

All groups must book in advance. Admission is free but a donation of £3 per person is encouraged.

To book a visit you need to complete and submit an online booking form.

If you would like to arrange a tour for your group while in the museum, please see the information section 'Guided Tours and Gallery Talks' below.

If you are arranging or leading an organised party, there is no charge for external guides to deliver their own tours in the galleries. We would strongly recommend for ease of movement in the spaces that you do not guide groups of more than 30 persons and ask that you consider collecting a contribution from your tour members or making a donation via your own organisation.

Guided Tours and Gallery Talks

There is a free curator led, guided tour every Wednesday at 1pm. Places are limited to 25 people and advance booking is recommended. This tour is open to individuals and small groups up to a maximum of 5 people. Call 020 7869 6560 to reserve places.

  • The Wretched Child in Hunter's Time by Professor Lewis Spitz, FRCS

Find out more about what subjects are covered at talk of the day.
