The Royal College of Surgeons of England has welcomed a continued fall in total waiting times in Wales, now five months in a row. New figures show NHS waiting lists in Wales decreased to 731,102 in February 2023.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England has welcomed a continued fall in total waiting times in Wales, now four months in a row. New figures show NHS waiting lists in Wales decreased to 734,116 in January 2023.

Responding to the report’s findings, Mr Matthew Garrett, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, said:
“We welcome this important progress report on Smiling Matters and congratulate the CQC on galvanising action on oral health within care homes. It is encouraging that despite the pandemic, care homes have shown improvements in almost all areas and have become more aware of NICE oral health guidelines. This means more people are having their oral health assessed and reviewed."

In response to the Budget delivered today by the Chancellor, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, the Royal College of Surgeons of England Vice President, Mr Tim Mitchell said:
“The increased limit on the annual pension allowance and abolishing the lifetime pension allowance announced today is a very welcome step for surgeons who currently face difficult decisions around pensions, tax and retirement."

Professor Fiona Myint, Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, has warned that continuing to reduce the backlog of over 7.21 million patients waiting for treatment will be “difficult and slow”, unless the government publishes a workforce plan for the NHS that is fully funded and outlines the number of staff needed in the future, as promised.
