Exams FAQ

Below we provide answers to frequently asked questions about RCS exams. If you have a query that is not answered here, please contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.

How can I apply for exams?

For UK sittings of the DO-HNS, MRCS or MJDF exams, you can apply online.

For any exams not yet available to apply for online, please go to the relevant exam page on our website and you will find an application form for this particular exam. Having completed the form, please post it and any supporting documentation to the following address so that it reaches us before/by the close of the deadline:

Exams Department
The Royal College of Surgeons of England
35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields
London
WC2A 3PE

When making an online application, should I register as a new candidate?

If you have previously taken a course or exam at the College, you are likely to have an account already registered with us. You will therefore not need to register as a new candidate; instead you should login to your existing account. Your username will be the email address that you used to register for any previous courses/exams at the College.

If you have not previously created a password or forgotten it you can reset your password.

If you do not remember which email address you used, please telephone the departmental reception, and we will be able to provide you with the necessary details: 0207 869 6281.

What should I do if I receive an error message when applying online?

Our website receives a lot of traffic – particularly at the time of a deadline – and therefore you may receive an error message when attempting to apply online. If this happens please try using another browser – ie if you are using Internet Explorer, try using Mozilla Firefox. Alternatively, you could try using a different computer as occasionally there is a problem with the way some PCs interface with our website. If your problem persists, please call our reception on 0207 869 6281.

Where should I send the photographs that support my exam application?

The photographs that are required to complete exam applications should be sent to:

Exams Department
The Royal College of Surgeons of England
35-43 Lincoln’s Inn Fields,London
WC2A 3PE

However, if you have already provided us with photographs for exams previously taken at the College, then you will not need to submit more in the post. On the day of your exam, you can provide us with the passport photograph, as well as a relevant form of photo identification.

If I need to withdraw from an exam can my fees be transferred or refunded?

Unfortunately the RCS cannot transfer an examination fee, however we can offer a full or partial refund in accordnace with the below information.

If you withdraw in writing before the application closing date for the examination, a refund is possible minus a 20% administrative fee.

If you withdraw on medical grounds either before or after the close of a deadline, you are normally able to obtain a full refund as long as you are able to provide us with a medical certificate stating the reason(s) that you were not able to take your exam.

If you withdraw due to compassionate reasons, a supporting letter from either your consultant or surgical tutor should be provided. We can then normally organise a refund for you.

If you withdraw after the application closing date for the examination without compassionate or medical grounds, you will not be entitled for a refund.

Can I apply online with fees that are already being held by The Royal College of Surgeons of England?

If you are applying online you will have to pay the full fee in order to process your application. Nevertheless, if a refund had previously been agreed a refund will be processed for the surplus fees paid.

When will the exam admission letter/result letter be sent to me?

Admission letters are usually sent at least 10-14 days before the date of an exam. No other confirmation will be sent between your initial application and this letter being sent.

Three to four weeks after the exam, you will be able to log-in to your account to view your results. After another two weeks, a result letter will be posted to you.

Can you send me a replacement exam admission letter/exam result letter?

If you have not received an admission letter within three weeks before the exam, or have not received your result letter within six weeks of taking the exam, please contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.

Before requesting a replacement letter, please ensure your contact details in your online are correct.

Can the College help me obtain a visa?

The College is able to produce a visa letter in support of an application. This will cover the examination period in the country where the exam is being held.

Candidates need to request a visa letter as The Royal College of Surgeons of England do not automatically produce these letters.

Can fees be transferred between different overseas centres?

Unfortunately we are unable to transfer fees between different overseas centres.

Where can I find further information on individual examinations?

For more information pertaining to individual examinations, please visit the relevant exam section of the website where you will find the syllabus.

After submitting my application do I need to do anything?

Your application will be looked at in detail after the closing date. If there is anything missing from your application you will be contacted by the Exams Department.

If your application is fine you will be sent your admission letter at least 10-14 days before the exam.
