About this module
This module considers the anatomical features and surgical approaches to a variety of common abdominal hernias. Beginning with a general discussion surrounding mesh placement and the impact of hernia repair to the NHS, the module progresses through sessions on ventral, groin and incisional hernias. Participants will gain insight into the key distinctions and considerations present in both open and laparoscopic hernia repair, and awareness of how patients presenting with hernias are assessed.

Learning Outcomes
The following topics are covered in the module:
- Introduction to hernia
- Ventral hernia
- Groin hernia
- Incisional hernia
After completing the Hernia module, you will be able to:
- Describe the anatomical features to ventral, groin and incisional hernias.
- Outline the management of a patient who presents with hernia, and obtain their consent.
- Explain the surgical approaches to ventral, groin and incisional hernias.
- Differentiate between open and laparoscopic hernia repair.
Format
You will have access to this module for 6 months, which you can also extend.
This is an interactive online module within the RCS e-learning platform. Following the four main e-learning sessions, participants must complete an Assessment session consisting of 17 multiple choice questions. You must achieve at least 75% on this assessment to receive your certificate.
This module requires the completion of 3 work based assessments (WBA). These include 1 case based discussion (CBD) of a patient with a ventral hernia, 1 clinical evaluation exercise (CEX) of a patient presenting with a groin hernia and 1 case based discussion (CBD) of a patient with an incisional hernia.
