PGCert: Introduction to plastic surgery

What you'll learn

This module consists of seven sessions covering key aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery. It includes skin pathophysiology, reconstructive techniques, split-thickness skin grafts, free tissue transfer, burns physiology and assessment, burns management and skin cancer.

You will gain an insight into the scope of plastic surgery and the variety of reconstructive methods that can be employed, learn about the advantages and disadvantages of split-thickness and full-thickness skin grafts, and explore the principles and application of free tissue transfer. You will cover the physiology and assessment of burn injuries and their effects on the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems, as well as how to effectively manage burns outside of a burns centre. You will go onto learn about three common skin cancers and the role of histology in their diagnosis and prognostication.

  • Skin pathophysiology
  • Reconstructive techniques
  • Split-thickness skin grafts
  • Free tissue transfer
  • Burns physiology and assessment
  • Burns management and skin cancer

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the physiology of burn injuries, describing the effects burns have on the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems, and assessing the total body surface area (TBSA) of burns in both adults and children.
  • Outline the principles of the reconstructive sphere and make appropriate suggestions for reconstructive options of common wounds that are referred to plastic surgery.
  • Describe the structure and function of the skin, outlining treatment strategies for common skin pathology.
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of both full- and split-thickness skin grafts, listing common donor sites and potential complications.
  • Describe the clinical features of basal and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma, understanding the role of histology in the diagnosis of these conditions and its role in prognostication.
