Exam Overview

This is a temporary booking page for candidates contacted by email to complete payment for the Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) Part 2 exam in November 2025, following confirmation email errors.

Places are not allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so you have time to complete this step. The booking window closes at 5pm on the closing date.

Eligibility

Education and Training Requirements

A brief overview of LDS candidate eligibility is provided below. Please read the LDS exam regulations and LDS Part 2 application guidance for a more detailed breakdown.

To be eligible to enter the LDS Part 2 exam all candidates must provide:

 

  • Primary Dental Qualification (and NARIC statement of comparability for non-UK degrees)
  • Clinical reference with minimum of 1600 hours of surgical practice (link below)
  • Character reference (link below)
  • Certificate of Good Standing issued no more than 3 months before the application deadline
  • IELTS certificate no more than 2 years old with minimum area scores of 6.5 and minimum overall of 7.0

All candidates are expected to familiarise themselves with these guidelines and ensure they have all necessary documents ready before applying for the exam to avoid any difficulties. We cannot grant exemptions to certain criteria unless they are stated in the regulations.

If you wish to withdraw from the exam, you may or may not be entitled to a full or partial refund according to the guidelines outlined in our refund policy.

Exemptions

Format of Examination

The Part 2 exam of the Licence in Dental Surgery (LDS) will be held over a two-day period and consists of two sections:

  • the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) consisting of 12 stations, each of 7 minute duration;
  • the ‘unseen case’ exam - (based on an objective structured long examination – OSLE model) which is designed to test candidates’ diagnosis treatment planning and clinical reasoning. Consisting of four cases, approximately 30 minutes each.

Below is an outline of the major competencies/learning outcomes that may be assessed. These represent broad categories of professional activity and concerns that occur in the general practice of dentistry and are interdisciplinary in orientation and must embrace an element of critical thinking.

a) Improving the oral health of individuals, families and groups in the community
