Job description and person specification

 

The Royal College of Surgeons of England wishes to recruit a Clinical Lead for their new leadership and professional passport programme. This programme will be a new series of work that supports members through key leadership and professional development topics at the transitional stages of their career. This might include, but is not limited to, such topics as communication skills, team work, supported decision making, and change management. This will involve looking at the full surgical career span and tailoring the learning of a particular topic, if required, to fit the needs of each transitional stage allowing for practical application and for the learning to be relevant and delivered within context.

At RCS, we are proud to design practical skills and professional development courses and e-learning programmes that are delivered to over 10,000 participants every year, making us one of the largest providers of surgical education in the world. We believe in combining innovation and expertise to deliver the highest quality in surgical education.

The initial focus for this piece of work will be developing the learning that lends itself best to a digital format so that we can reach our full membership regardless of location. We are excited about progressing this area of education providing that the learning remains central and allows participants to be able to develop invaluable skills through being able to apply theory to practical experience in a supportive environment.

Job summary

As Clinical Lead you will have responsibility for developing the leadership and professional passport programme.  Your role is to:

  • Represent the College as the public face of the leadership and professional passport programme;
  • Recruit for and lead the development work produced by the working group in creating educational products ensuring the content is in line with UK Curriculum, UK practice and guidelines;
  • Ensure the programme delivery meets the required quality standards and the agreed criteria;
  • Ensure that the format of the course is the best type to meet the learning outcome, topic and career grade;
  • Prioritise the development of the programme across topic/ career stage;
  • Ensure that agreed deadlines are met and content can be released to an agreed schedule.

 

Responsibilities

The Clinical Lead responsibilities include:

  • Leading and promoting the leadership and professional passport programme;
  • The workflows and outputs from the working group;
  • Working as part of a team including with the RCS educational staff;
  • Ensuring the quality of the programme and any supporting materials;
  • Ensuring that materials are produced to agreed deadlines; 
  • Working closely with the Educator to ensure the educational quality and standards of the programme are developed.

You will report to the Director of Learning and Chair of the Learning Committee at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and will be required to attend review meetings and participate in an annual appraisal.

We expect that most of the development work, including the communications between the working group and RCS staff to be maintained virtually. There may be a requirement to attend a meeting at the College from time to time. Standard class travel will be arranged by the College, together with accommodation, if overnight stays are required. All travel and subsistence claims will be managed according to the RCS policy.

The post will be for two years subject to satisfactory performance.

Person specification

Essential

  • Experience of one of the following: developing leadership or professional development programmes; undertaking a formal professional development programme; and/ or demonstrable interest and experience in this area of work;
  • Outstanding ability to lead and manage a group of individuals;
  • Experience developing education in multiple formats including digital;
  • Effective interpersonal and time management skills;
  • Creative and energetic team player with proven leadership qualities;
  • Ability to develop effective partnerships with relevant stakeholders and organisations;
  • Current Member or Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, or prepared to become a Fellow;
  • A current trainer, fulfilling the GMC trainer requirements;
  • Basic IT competence (e-mail, word processing and spreadsheets).

     

    Desirable

  • Masters in Medical Education, or an equivalent qualification or experience;
  • Previous experience as a training programme director or working within a local HEE or School.

Remuneration

The College has developed a model in which RCS makes a contribution towards remuneration directly to the Chair’s employing Trust rather than the individual. The employer can thus make appropriate local arrangements to cover clinical commitments and the individual has no break in service, resuming his or her own contract when demitting from the role. The sessional commitment for this role is 1 PA per week. The individual will therefore need to agree and make arrangements with their Trust and any agreement will be between RCS, the Trust and the individual.

The role will commence in September 2020
