Using the RCS Library collections during the redevelopment, 2017-2020

The Library’s collections of books and journals are currently held at the British Library in Boston Spa, Yorkshire, and at The National Archives. Items from these collections may be available for viewing at the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) in Clerkenwell.

The Archives are currently held at LMA: please see their webpages for more information.

Post-1950 books and journals

Members and Affiliates

Books from these collections may be borrowed or made available for viewing at LMA in Clerkenwell. If would like to view books from the Library collections, please check SurgiCat+, our online catalogue, to ensure that we hold the book and then email library@rcseng.ac.uk with your RCS Membership number and the details of the title(s) you are interested in. If you wish to borrow via post, please see the postal loan section below.

Details to include are:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Publication date/edition
  • Shelf number
  • Please let us know whether you want to borrow (either in person or by post) or view the book

We will email you when we receive the book, to advise you of any difficulties, or if we need further information. Books can be collected from the College, Monday – Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm. If you would like to view books at the LMA, an appointment will be required: this is subject to the same arrangements and conditions as for pre-1950 books (below).

Please be aware that there is no dedicated Library study/research space in the Lincoln's Inn Fields building during the redevelopment period.

Postal loans

Books that are available for loan can be borrowed and returned by post. This service is only available for Members and Affiliates living in the UK.

If you would like to request a postal loan from the Library, please complete the Postal Loan Form. There will a charge of £5.00 per book and borrowers will be responsible for the cost of the return postage to us.

  • Please check SurgiCat+ (the Library catalogue) to ensure that we hold the book.
  • Complete the Postal Loan Form providing full contact details, including your postal address, and email the form to library@rcseng.ac.ukPlease note that this form is an editable pdf and must be saved onto your own (local) device before you edit.
  • This form should also be used to provide your payment details. We accept most credit/debit cards, with the exception of American Express. We will not process the payment until we have posted the book to you.
  • When posting the book back to the Library, please use the return address label enclosed with the book. You will be responsible for the return postage and we recommend that you ask for proof of posting or use a registered or recorded delivery

Book chapters

If you only require a single chapter or short excerpt from a book and know the page numbers, a chapter can be sent to you as a photocopy or scan, rather than retrieving the book from the British Library in Boston Spa, Yorkshire. Please see our Document Delivery page for more information.

Journal articles

If you require an article from a journal, please check SurgiCat+, the online catalogue, to see if the title is held in the RCS collections.

Many of our journals are held electronically and Members have direct access to full-text versions of these. Please see our online journals page or email library@rcseng.ac.uk for more information.

If your request is for an article from a journal that we only hold in print, please see our Document Delivery page for more information.

Researchers

While our collections are stored off-site during the redevelopment of the RCS buildings, requests to view items will be considered on a case by case basis if the material is not available elsewhere. Where a viewing is agreed, the item(s) will be made available at the London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell. This is subject to the same arrangements and conditions as for pre-1950 books (below).

Pre-1950 books

Requesting material

If you would like to view anything from the Library collections, please check SurgiCat+, the online catalogue, to see if we hold it.

You should then email library@rcseng.ac.uk with the details of the item(s) you would like to see and when: please note that we require a minimum of five working days’ notice.

Details to include are:

  • Title
  • Author
  • Publication date/edition
  • Shelf number

We will then email you to confirm that an appointment has been made for you on a specific date; or to advise you of any problems with the material or date that you have requested. We will respond to all emails within five working days.

Please do not assume that an appointment has been made unless you receive an email confirming the details with you. Receipt of an auto-response is not confirmation of an appointment request.

Using material at the London Metropolitan Archive

The opening hours of the Archive Study Area (ASA) at LMA are:

  • Monday 9.30 am - 4.45 pm (closed Bank Holidays)
  • Tuesday 9.30 am - 7.30 pm
  • Wednesday 9.30 am - 7.30 pm
  • Thursday 9.30 am - 7.30 pm
  • Friday – CLOSED

Information on visiting the LMA can be found here.

  • Pre-1950 books must be viewed in the ASA at LMA
  • All researchers must have a History Card. You can begin registration for one online and complete it on arrival or register when you arrive at LMA
  • Only pencils are allowed for note-taking in the ASA to avoid the risk of irreversible damage to the books
  • Staff will advise on how to handle the books to keep them in the best condition
  • Archives and pre-1950 books cannot be photocopied either by researchers or by staff. Personal photography is possible (for a fee payable to LMA) but certain items cannot be photographed. Please ask when making your appointment(s) so that staff can advise.

A member of the RCS Archives or Library staff is based at LMA from Monday to Thursday, 10 am - 4 pm, which means that there should be somebody available to answer queries about the RCS collections. If this is not possible on the day, your query will be answered as soon as possible.

The Library offices at Lincoln’s Inn Fields will continue to be staffed, Monday to Friday only, 9.30 am - 5.30 pm.

We cannot recall material to the Library Enquiry Point at Lincoln’s Inn Fields which is not ordinarily borrowable. This means that archive materials and pre-1950 books will only be available at LMA, and not at Lincoln’s Inn Fields. The opening hours of the Library Enquiry Point at Lincoln’s Inn Fields will vary according to events. Please check the Library web pages for information.
