Event Overview

We are delighted to be hosting a roundtable event for SAS surgeons and other stakeholders at the College's Outreach Hub in Manchester on Wednesday 12 June 2024.

The event will be a fantastic opportunity to come together and network with local SAS colleagues. Lunch is from 12pm, and during the afternoon we will be looking to build on some of the key themes from the College’s SAS strategy, ‘Unlocking the potential’, launched last year. We will be facilitating sessions focusing on the following topics:

Leadership

The culture within NHS hospital management is often seen as a barrier to SAS doctors progressing to leadership positions within trusts. In a 2019 GMC survey, 72% of SAS doctors felt like valued members of the team but only 53% felt they were given an opportunity to participate in decisions at their workplace. Empowering the SAS workforce will help foster a sense of belonging and enable them to flourish and maximise their contribution to the NHS. In this session we’ll discuss how to influence trust leaders to collaborate with SAS surgeons and encourage them into leadership roles.

Mentorship

Mentoring has long been recognised as a valuable model to ease the transition from trainee to consultant. Effective mentoring creates a sense of belonging and empowerment, facilitating confidence and resilience. While most Royal Colleges have an expectation that employers will have established mentorship models for new consultants at the time of appointment, there is little evidence of such models for new SAS doctors. In this session we will explore the various mentorship models for SAS doctors in their early years and how these might be implemented to support their clinical and professional development.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
