Event Overview

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) is partnering with The University of Manchester to offer a free full-day surgical careers workshop to schools with pupils interested in a career in medicine or surgery.

The workshop is aimed at students in years 12-13 who are hoping to study medicine at university. It is an ideal opportunity for those drafting their personal statements and in need of tips for interview. Students will have the chance to practice some practical surgical skills, ask questions of medical students on life at university, and learn more about surgical careers.

The workshop runs from 11am to 3pm and students must commit to the full day.

Students will be given a talk by a surgeon about their career choices, including suggestions on creating good university applications and personal statements, and a Q&A with current medical and surgical students about life in medical school and the medical school interview.

Attendees will also take part in practical workshops where medical trainees will teach basic suturing skills and surgical knot-tying, as well as be given a tour of the School of Medical Sciences to learn more about the experience at medical school.

These sessions will give the students an opportunity to speak to medical students and surgeons in training and find out more about medicine and surgery as a career path and the qualifications they will need to get there.

There is a maximum of 10 students per school and advance booking is essential, to OutreachNorth@rcseng.ac.uk

All places must be booked through schools but students can attend without teacher supervision.
