FDS responds to GDC consultation on proposed professionalism framework
The Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England has responded to the General Dental Council’s (GDC) consultation on its proposed new Principles of Professionalism Framework.
The framework would replace the current Standards for the Dental Team, introduced in 2013. The GDC is proposing to move away from the existing nine principles towards four overarching principles of professionalism:
- Treat patients with respect,
- Practise safely and effectively,
- Maintain trust in the profession and
- Work in partnership with others
The GDC has stated that the proposals are not intended to reduce the standards expected of dental professionals or change existing fitness to practise processes. Rather, they represent a move towards a framework that places greater emphasis on professional judgement and supporting dental professionals to apply professional standards in a range of clinical settings.
Why FDS responded:
The proposed framework represents a significant change to the way professional standards are set out for the dental profession. Given FDS’ role in promoting high standards of dental practice, education and professionalism, we considered it important to contribute to the consultation.
Our response broadly supports the move towards a modernised, principles based framework, while highlighting the areas where clear and practical guidance will be important to support dental professionals in applying the principles in practice.
FDS submitted its response on 27 August 2026, following input from the FDS Board and the Dean of FDS, Professor Martyn Cobourne.
FDS will continue to engage with the GDC as it considers responses and develops its final approach to professional standards and guidance.
