Surgical care practitioner programmes
Surgical care practitioners (SCPs) are registered non-medical healthcare professionals, often from nursing and allied health backgrounds, who support surgical teams to care for patients.
Managed voluntary register of surgical care practitioners
The managed voluntary register (MVR) is a searchable register of SCPs who meet strict standards for training, skills and professional behaviour. It is hosted in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and together we have set out a clear curricula and standards to determine the scope of practice of SCPs.
It’s free to join if you:
- hold an MSc or PGDip following the SCP curriculum framework
- are enrolled in an accredited SCP training programme in the UK
- can show evidence of established SCP practice or a relevant academic or clinical role
You must also be registered with a statutory regulatory body (such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health and Care Professions Council), have experience as a UK SCP and commit to ongoing professional development.
Curriculum framework for the surgical care practitioner
The curriculum framework sets the clinical, technical and professional standards for SCPs. UK universities use it to design and deliver postgraduate education programmes for SCPs.
