Training the Trainers: Developing CCrISP Educators
Take your educational practice to the next level with this intensive two-day teaching skills course, designed to equip you with the delivery, assessment and feedback skills required to confidently deliver simulation-based educational activities.
Why take this course?
Drawing on content from our nationally and internationally recognised Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient course, you will:
- Explore the principles of adult learning theory and their application to educational practice.
- Learn directly from highly experienced clinical faculty in a collaborative learning environment.
- Gain practical strategies for delivering interactive small-group sessions and scenario-based assessment (moulage).
- Understand the role of summative and formative assessment in the learner journey.
- Develop the skills to support learners through constructive, timely and effective feedback.
- Learn how to identify and support learners who are struggling, using a holistic and learner-centred approach.
- Receive feedback and mentoring to refine your teaching skills.
- Network with peers and mentors to support your development as an educator.
- Prepare for faculty and leadership roles in surgical education.
Successful completion not only results in a certificate but also qualifies you to join our pool of CCrISP and START (Systematic Training in Acute Illness Recognition and Treatment) faculty. This will enable you to teach on CCrISP/START courses in the UK and internationally, and gather further feedback on your teaching skills, which can be used to support formal professional development processes such as portfolio pathway applications. Regular teaching on national courses such as CCrISP can also build towards greater responsibility and leadership roles in surgical education.
Please note this course is only available to surgeons, O&G specialists, anaesthetists and intensive care medicine doctors working at ST5+ (or LED equivalent). Please note you will not be able to book a place on the course until your application form has been checked. If you would like to secure a place on one of the dates listed below, please complete the application form.
For your information, you will be required to undertake some digital preparatory learning before the on-site course to ensure you are ready to get the most out of the face-to-face days.
This course is worth 14 CPD points.

Suitability
This course is ideal for doctors who currently hold a post at ST5 (Specialty Training year five) or above.
Completion of the pre-course familiarisation and MCQs with a minimum score of 80% is required.
While you do not need to have completed the CCrISP Provider course, some previous experience in delivering medical training is helpful but not essential.
Learning outcomes
After attending this course, you will be able to:
- explain how to develop a positive learning environment for CCrISP participants
- use structured questioning techniques to promote clinical reasoning and participant engagement
- set up and deliver small-group and moulage scenarios in accordance with CCrISP standards, ensuring clarity, and learner engagement
- deliver constructive, timely feedback using recognised feedback models during simulated teaching encounters
- assess participant performance using CCrISP criteria and provide clear, actionable feedback
Format
You will develop the ability to deliver high‑quality, discussion‑led teaching sessions while maintaining the core principles and ethos of CCrISP. In a hands-on, collaborative learning environment, you'll also practise running patient scenarios and assessing participants with confidence and impartiality.
The face-to-face component uses practical demonstrations, discussion and feedback alongside simulated scenarios and group work. You will deliver short training sessions, run moulages, and receive feedback from experienced faculty.
In-person format
On day one, you will explore the ethos and structure of the CCrISP Provider course and apply the principles of adult learning theory to group teaching and moulage‑based education. You will:
- work with mentors to identify your development needs;
- observe faculty demonstrations and practise core teaching skills;
- refine questioning techniques;
- learn how to deliver effective feedback;
- conduct dynamic, discussion led small‑group sessions;
- build confidence in managing learner dynamics and time pressures.
On day two, you will focus on moulage delivery, assessment and supporting learners. You will:
- observe and practise moulage set-up, delivery, and assessment;
- develop skills in managing challenging conversations and scenarios;
- gain an introductory understanding of delivering the START programme;
- conclude with sessions on faculty responsibilities, course administration and progression to course director roles.
Pre-course e-learning
You are expected to complete a set of mandatory pre‑learning activities before attending the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) course. These activities ensure you arrive with a solid foundation and are ready to take part fully in the practical elements of the programme.
As part of your preparation, you are expected to:
- complete mandatory e‑learning modules that introduce the core principles used throughout the course;
- write a personal development plan (PDP) to reflect on your current practice and identify areas for growth;
- prepare to deliver group sessions and patient scenarios (moulage) using the materials provided alongside the faculty and participant handbooks to help you.
You will receive access to all required resources at least four weeks before your course date. The total preparation time is approximately 5–6 hours, and this work contributes to the CPD points awarded for the course.
Follow-up e-learning
