Training the Trainers - Developing CCrISP Instructors

The course is designed to prepare participants to teach and assess effectively within the CCrISP and START (Systematic Training in Acute Illness Recognition and Treatment) programmes, while developing broader educational skills that can be applied in a range of training environments.

You will:

• apply adult learning principles to your teaching practice
• facilitate engaging, learner-centred group discussions
• use questioning to encourage participation and clinical reasoning
• practise facilitating small-group sessions and setting up, delivering and assessing moulages
• give constructive, timely and effective feedback
• make fair and consistent assessment decisions
• support learners with different needs and levels of confidence
• manage challenging situations in the learning environment
• receive feedback and mentoring to support your development

The course uses CCrISP content to give you a realistic setting in which to develop and practise these transferable training skills. Successful completion enables you to join both the CCrISP and START faculty communities, connecting you with a network of clinicians committed to delivering high-quality training and supporting learner development.

The course also provides practical evidence of your teaching, feedback and assessment skills to support your professional development and portfolio. Continued teaching on CCrISP and START courses can help you build experience and progress towards wider faculty and leadership roles.

After attending this course, you will be able to:

• explain how to develop a positive learning environment for CCrISP participants
• use structured questioning techniques to promote clinical reasoning and participant engagement
• set up and deliver small-group and moulage scenarios in accordance with CCrISP standards, ensuring clarity, and learner engagement
• deliver constructive, timely feedback using recognised feedback models during simulated teaching encounters 
• assess participant performance using CCrISP criteria and provide clear, actionable feedback

The course combines preparatory online learning with two interactive face-to-face days. You will take part in demonstrations, group discussions, practical teaching activities and simulated patient scenarios.

You will work with a mentor to identify your development needs and reflect on your progress. Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to practise your skills, receive feedback and try different approaches in a supportive environment.

Pre-course learning

You will complete mandatory online activities to help you make the most of the face-to-face days. These include:

• familiarising yourself with the CCrISP Provider course and relevant course materials, including completing the CCrISP knowledge MCQ assessment with a score of at least 80%
• exploring adult learning and the different roles involved in delivering CCrISP
• beginning a personal development plan to identify your priorities for the course

You should become familiar with the CCrISP topics you may work with, but you will not need to prepare detailed teaching sessions in advance. You will observe faculty demonstrations and receive preparation time during the course before putting the approaches into practice.

Face-to-face training

Across the two days, you will:

• observe experienced faculty modelling effective training techniques
• practise facilitating small-group discussions
• explore questioning, feedback and classroom-management techniques
• set up and run simulated patient scenarios
• practise making and communicating assessment decisions
• consider how to recognise and reduce barriers to learning
• reflect on your progress with support from your mentor

You will also be introduced to the START programme, which helps Foundation Year doctors use a systematic approach to recognise and manage acutely unwell patients, and consider how to apply your training skills within this setting.

Course assessment

Throughout the course, you will receive feedback and support from faculty and mentors to help you demonstrate the skills expected. Assessment focuses on your ability to facilitate learning, provide feedback, make fair assessment decisions and support participant development. To complete the course successfully, you must:

• complete all mandatory pre-course learning
• achieve at least 80% in the CCrISP Provider MCQs
• attend all sessions on both face-to-face days
• demonstrate effective teaching and facilitation during a small-group session
• demonstrate effective moulage facilitation and assessment skills

Certification cannot be awarded until all pre-course requirements and course assessments have been completed successfully.

This course is suitable for surgeons, obstetrics and gynaecology specialists, anaesthetists and intensive care medicine doctors working at ST5 or above, or at an equivalent level.

You do not need to have completed the CCrISP Provider course. Previous experience of delivering medical training may be helpful, but it is not essential.
