Intercalated Bachelor of Science Degree in Surgery or Surgical Related Area

This date accommodates medical students who are not allocated their project until Christmas.
The RCS England Intercalated BSc in surgery or surgical-related area grants are up to £5000 for medical students wishing to pursue a career in surgery.
Applicants should evidence their interest in pursuing both a career in surgery and in research and outline their plan to undertake an Intercalated BSc in surgery, inclusive of surgical research, during the academic year commencing September 2025.
Please note you may apply if your university offers an intercalated MSc instead of an intercalated BSc.
The grants are made competitively and may be used flexibly to support the award holder’s intercalated degree, for the purpose described in their application form.
The grant may be used to support the research element of the intercalated BSc/MSc, but funds are not available to support individual living or subsistence costs.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, you must be:
- a clinical student at a UK medical school
- a paid affiliate member of RCS England, and successful applicants must remain in good standing order with their membership fees throughout the tenure of the award.
- wishing to pursue a career in surgery
- undertaking an Intercalated BSc or MSc in the academic year commencing in September 2025.
Applicants should not have received an intercalated award from RCS England before.
Conditions for Award
Intercalated BSc/MSc in surgery for medical students grants are made on the understanding that the host centre, the supervisor and the applicant agree to accept the Terms and Conditions relating to the scheme and any amendments issued during the course of the award. The project should commence within the academic year of the award date.
If successful the grant may be used to support the research element of the Intercalated BSc however funds are not available to support individual living or subsistence costs. Some elements of travel may be supported particularly where evidenced that this travel is vital for the undertaking of the research/data collection.

- Confidential report from your proposed supervisor (via application portal).
