NHS Changeover Day: Advice from those who've been there

The first Wednesday in August is a significant milestone for resident doctors across the NHS. Whether you're starting your first role as a foundation doctor, moving to a new placement or returning after a break, changeover day can bring a mix of excitement, anticipation and nerves.

The good news? Every consultant and senior clinician once stood exactly where you are now.

We asked members of our Council, course faculty and wider membership to share memories of their first days in a new role. From misplaced stethoscopes to getting lost in the hospital carpark, their stories are a reminder that nobody starts out knowing everything.

So what helped them through those early days?

  • Lean on your team, especially your nursing colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Remember that feeling nervous and excited is completely normal.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Be kind to yourself. Confidence comes with time and experience.

Watch the video below to hear their memories and reflections.

We also asked our members what advice they would give to someone starting a new role or rotation.

Their messages were:

  • don't compare yourself to others;
  • ask for help when you need it;
  • embrace every opportunity to learn;
  • listen to the people around you;
  • work as part of a team. No doctor succeeds alone;
  • enjoy the journey.

Most importantly, remember that you're not doing this on your own. Surgery is a team effort, and everyone around you shares the same goal: delivering the best possible care for patients.
