The Worshipful Company of Cutlers' Surgical Fellowship
Develop your surgical skills and gain international experience with this fellowship. The Cutler’s Fellowship supports you in travelling overseas to learn a surgical technique, procedure, or treatment to benefit NHS patients on your return to the UK.

Eligibility
To apply for this fellowship, you must be undertaking a period of training overseas to learn a surgical technique, procedure, or treatment. You will be responsible for ensuring your travel and training position is confirmed.
You must also:
- be a UK-based member or fellow of the College;
- be a surgical trainee or consultant surgeon;
- not have received a Cutlers’ Surgical Fellowship funding before.
About the Cutlers’ Fellowships
The Cutlers’ Fellowship in Surgery is open to members and fellows of the College working in hospitals throughout the UK. It gives you the opportunity to undertake a period of training overseas to learn a surgical technique, procedure, or treatment. This will help you improve your practice on your return to the UK.
Awards are made competitively and may be used flexibly to support your travel and accommodation costs during the overseas visit described in your application form.
What’s expected from grant holders
Your grant funding should only be used for travel and accommodation costs to support the project detailed in the application form.
If successful in your application, you will also be expected to:
- notify The Cutlers’ Company if there are any proposed changes to your project, supervisor (or wider circumstances) from the application, at which point further guidance will be provided;
- advise The Cutlers’ Company if you are awarded any additional funding to support the visit;
- remain in good standing order with your membership fees throughout the tenure of the award.
What you’ll gain from the grant
This fellowship provides up to £10,000 that you can use flexibly to support travel and accommodation costs associated with your project overseas, for the purpose described in your application form.
How to apply
You can apply via the Applicant form. You should submit your completed form along with attachments detailed below to clerk@cutlerslondon.co.uk by the closing date, 30 October 2026, with Surgical Fellowship 2027 in the subject line.
The form has eight sections, covering your details, along with description, purpose, and benefits of your proposed fellowship.
You will also need to submit:
- a two-page CV;
- a letter of support from a head of the department or appropriate consultant where you are currently working;
- confirmation from the Head of the unit at the institute where you will undertake the fellowship.
What happens next
We will check every application against the eligibility criteria, after which eligible applications go through an independent panel review process, chaired by The Cutler’s Company.
When assessing your application, we will place particular emphasis on:
- CV and career progress to date;
- the opportunities provided at the centre of excellence where the fellowship will be undertaken;
- the innovative qualities of the skills to be learnt and how gaining such skills will be applied in the UK for the benefit for patient care.
You will be advised of the outcome by The Cutler’s Company in February.
