Rosetrees NHS Consultant Research Fellowship Award 2020/21

Two-year NHS Consultant Research Fellowship

Applications closed

Thanks to the generosity of the Rosetrees Charitable Trust, The Royal College of Surgeons of England is introducing a two year NHS Consultant Research Fellowship up to the value of £20,000 per year towards salary costs.

The funding is to be used to support protected time and enable high quality research.  Awards are made competitively and may be used towards salary costs to support dedicated research time in the award holder’s job plan.
These experienced surgeons are those who have previously undertaken research but are now in full-time clinical practice. The funding is designed to provide a mechanism for NHS consultants with a higher degree who are not currently research active, to undertake clinical research.
By investing in consultant level clinical research it may be used to assess new technologies, support delivery of new surgical trials and deliver project results that can be more rapidly implemented into patient care. It is expected the majority of work at this level would result in patient impact within 5 years.
With research at this level likely to be clinical (instead of basic sciences), consumables will be less of a concern. However, up to £5000 of funding above the salary costs will also be provided to support their projects e.g. software development, statistician time etc.
These grants are meant to act as ’seedcorn’ monies which will lead to the award of programme grants, and are not ‘top up’ funds. It is anticipated that the award holder will look for alternative sources of funding to support their research when this two year award ends.

All applicants should:

  • be members or fellows of The Royal College of Surgeons of England.
  • hold a full time post as an NHS consultant in surgery in a hospital in the UK, and should have been working at consultant level for a minimum of 5 years.
  • have a track record in research and hold a higher degree

Consultant research fellowship awards are made on the understanding that the host centre supports this application, and that the host centre and the applicant agree to accept the regulations and conditions relating to the scheme and any amendments issued during the course of the award.  Letters of support from both the Divisional Director and the Medical Director should accompany the application form.
