Suitability

You can take this module as part of the PGCert in Surgery, designed for FY1-2 & CT1-2.

You can also take this module as a standalone online course at any stage of your career.


To be eligible, candidates need to have access to an Educational / Clinical Supervisor.

Learning Outcomes

You will cover topics including:

  • colorectal cancer;
  • principles of endoscopy;
  • principles of GI anastomosis;
  • relevant surgical anatomy for colonic resections;
  • technical information about creating a pneumoperitoneum for laparoscopic surgery;
  • haemorrhoids and perianal disease .

After completing this Coloproctology: Colorectal Cancer module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the relevant basic scientific principles (including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and radiology) relating to specific colorectal conditions.
  • Explain the clinical presentation and management of patients with specific colorectal conditions.
  • Apply this knowledge in order to demonstrate an ability to assess and manage patients with specific colorectal conditions in an elective and emergency setting.
  • Describe the operative surgical principles involved in endoscopy (rigid sigmoidoscopy), creation of a pneumoperitoneum, open/closing a midline laparotomy and gastrointestinal anastomosis.
  • Demonstrate technical skills in performing these procedures with an appropriate level of supervision in their workplace.

Format

This is an interactive online module within the innovative RCS e-learning platform. This format means you can study using any device, whenever and wherever it suits you.

This module requires the completion of 5 work place based assessments (WBA). These include 2 clinical evaluation exercises (CEX), 2 direct observations of clinical procedure skills (DOPS) and 1 case based discussion (CBD). You will need to have an appropriate supervisor to complete these WBAs.

For more information on WBAs, please consult the ISCP website. If you do not have an Assigned Educational Supervisor (AES) you can use the ISCP guidance to find a suitable alternative, for example within the Case Based Discussion Guidance.

You will have access to this module for 6 months, which you can also extend.
