Statement in response to the death of Dr Ahmed Almaqadma, who was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons of England Humanitarian Innovation Fellowship, and a contributor to the College’s Humanitarian Surgery Initiative (HSI). Dr Almaqadma was working at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

In September 2023, NHS England published a sexual safety in healthcare charter following concerns raised by the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery (WPSMS) about the level of sexual misconduct in surgery and the wider NHS. The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) was one of the very first signatories to the charter and we continue to support the WPSMS in tackling sexual misconduct.

Royal College of Surgeons of England Past President, Professor Neil Mortensen, has been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours. Professor Mortensen has been made a Knight Bachelor for services to surgery and recognition of his contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is deeply distressed by the ongoing violence in Gaza, Israel and the Middle East and the resulting humanitarian crisis, which is affecting civilians on all sides. The tragic loss of life, including children, is heartbreaking.

A task and finish group has been established by the Intercollegiate Extended Surgical Team Board, which includes the surgical royal colleges, to address the gap in guidance for Physician Associates (PAs) and other roles in the extended surgical team (EST). The group will determine the scope of practice, training, assessment and governance arrangements for all members of the Extended Surgical Team, and how this relates to surgical training.

We are aware of the concerns expressed by our colleagues regarding the current and planned expansion of non-medically qualified roles, which will inevitably affect the surgical team. We share concerns about the activities that some members of the extended surgical team have anecdotally been allowed to undertake locally.
