This dynamic two-day course equips you with the confidence and expertise to manage deteriorating surgical patients. Learn a systematic approach, reduce risks, and apply multidisciplinary strategies to treat critically ill patients and save lives.
 
Led by expert faculty from surgical and anaesthetic specialities, this immersive training blends hands-on practice, real-world scenarios, and essential knowledge, all in a supportive and engaging environment. You'll develop your practical and theoretical skills and personal judgment to handle complex cases with precision and calm.

This course is worth 15 CPD points 

CCrISP is relevant to all specialities, however examples are predominately taken from general surgical patients. 

CCrISP is mapped to the ISCP syllabus and will support you in developing the relevant clinical and personal skills needed to succeed in ST3 interviews.

Suitability

The course is suitable for: CT1-2 and SAS grades. 

Senior trainees are also welcome to attend a CCrISP course if they have not done so before. 

Please note that FY1 trainees are not eligible to attend this course and should attend the Systematic Training in Acute Illness and Recognition and Treatment for Surgery (START Surgery) course instead.

FY2 trainees are not permitted to attend until they reach the final 2 months of their placement (June/July).

FY2 trainees should be aware that the course has been designed specifically for CTs so they may find the face-to-face sessions challenging. All participants should take care to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the best chance of passing the course.


Learning Outcomes

After attending this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a structured, comprehensive approach to managing surgical patients
  • Outline the methods available for improving detection of critical illness
  • Prioritise those patients who are at most risk and plan to reduce their risk of adverse outcomes
  • Recognise importance of clear communication to the care team, patient and relatives

Format

CCrISP is an interactive course that combines a variety of teaching and learning techniques, such as simulated patient scenarios, case-based skill stations and demonstrations. You will be encouraged to share knowledge and experience with your peers throughout the course. 

This is an assessed course and a certificate of completion will be awarded to successful participants.

You will participate in a variety of practical training sessions during the CCrISP course, including:

  • Master a systematic approach to assessing critically ill patients
  • Improve detection of subtle and varied signs of critical illness
  • Understand the importance of preventing complications
  • Recognise the surgeon's role in multidisciplinary care
  • Collaborate with nurses, surgeons, intensivists, and anaesthetists
  • Provide essential information and support to patients and their families during surgical care
