 Self-guided laparoscopic practice sessions

These 9am-12.30pm sessions will allow you to practice your core laparoscopic surgery skills using a range of high-quality equipment and basic synthetic models.

Please note this is self-directed rather than a taught session. We recommend you bring your own guidance resources, such as course manuals or electronic devices to play videos.

We don’t supply specialist synthetic models; however, you are welcome to purchase your own and bring these will you. Suturing pads and open surgical instruments will also be available for wound closure practice. Use of animal tissue is not permitted in these sessions.

There are two places available per laparoscopic system, so you will be required to share with another attendee and assist each other as necessary. If you are without a partner, we will arrange a camera holder for you to use.

RCS England membership entitles you to attend these sessions for free. Please note if you are not currently a member but would like to know more about RCS England membership, then please visit our membership page or reach out to the team at membership@rcseng.ac.uk

Suitability

Learner-led sessions are aimed at anyone wishing to practice and develop their laparoscopic skills. You may be planning to take the LapPass qualification in the future, enjoyed the limited experience you have had so far or be preparing for an upcoming course. In these sessions, you are in control and can practice whichever techniques you wish.

Participants should imagine all of the activities available during a Basic Surgical Skills course. We might be able to add in additional activities such as providing ligatures for knot tying.

Learning Outcomes

  • Improve instrument handling.
  • Develop hand-eye coordination and depth perception.
  • Practice suturing and knot tying techniques.

“I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”

Albert Einstein

Format

  • 3.5 hour practical session (9am-12.30pm).
  • Learner-led, not taught.
  • Please note that we do not issue certificates of attendance.

The laparoscopic trainers and stacks will be set up in advance and you are welcome to spend your time doing whichever activities you wish. You might be partnered with someone else or you might be using the trainer alone with a camera holder.
