Event Overview

Surgical myth-busting

Are you considering a career in surgery? Thanks to popular shows Grey’s Anatomy, House, and ER, we know there are myths about the profession perpetuated by TV medical dramas. This is what we like to call TV drama vs reality.

Never fear, our surgical myth-busting webinar is here! (or soon to be here, on Wednesday 4 March precisely).

As part of National Careers Week,we will be hosting a session on breaking these surgical stereotypes and myths surrounding the career.

Chaired by Mr Arin Saha, Regional Director and Consultant in Upper GI, Bariatric and General Surgery. Mr Saha will be joined by Dr Rebecca Harsten, Core Surgical Trainee at Kings College London Hospital, and Mr Simon Fleming, Orthopaedic Registrar, PhD Candidate and RCS RCPSC Morton Research Fellow in Surgery (MedEd), who will be helping answer common queries and challenge the myths and legends about being a surgeon.

  • “Well I can’t possibly be a surgeon and have a normal social life?”
  • “Can I be a surgeon and take a break, maybe to do some research?”
  • “Why would I become a surgeon now if technology is advancing and robots will take over?”
  • “Surgeons are basically only old grumpy men.”

Tune in to find out if surgery as a career is anything like those TV shows we all love to binge watch.

WHO YOU GONNA PAGE? The Royal College of Surgeons! If you have any questions you would like us to include in the session please email the events team.
