  • More than two in five children did not attend an NHS dentist in the last year

    30 Aug 2018 More than two in five children (41.4%), aged 0 to17, did not see an NHS dentist in the 12 months to 30 June 2018, according to figures published by NHS Digital today. This is a very small decrease compared to the same period in the previous year, when 41.8% of children did not visit a dentist. The Faculty of Dental Surgery has issued a statement in response.

    30 Aug 2018 Northern Ireland Department of Health waiting time statistics published today (Thursday 30 August) show there are now more than 18,000 patients waiting more than a year for inpatient treatment and almost 88,600 waiting more than a year for an outpatient appointment. The Royal College of Surgeons has said that this number is a symptom of long-standing problems with the Northern Ireland health service and not helped by the current political impasse in Northern Ireland.

  • Tongue splitting risks significant blood loss and nerve damage, warn surgeons

    03 Aug 2018 Cosmetic body modification enthusiasts are being warned that they are at serious risk of haemorrhage, infection and nerve damage by undergoing tongue splitting1, an extreme procedure where the tongue is cut in half to create a distinctive “forked” effect. Dental and plastic surgeons have issued new advice for anyone who is considering, or already has, a tongue split or oral piercing. The surgeons also say it is better if people do not to have these procedures at all.
  • New training scheme for surgeons of the future gets underway

    01 Aug 2018 The first cohort of surgical trainees to take part in the Improving Surgical Training (IST) pilot will take up their posts today (1 August 2018). The pilot training programme, developed by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) and Health Education England (HEE), will trial innovative improvements in the quality of training, a better balance between service and training for trainees, and professionalisation of the role of surgical trainers.

    19 Jul 2018 The BMJ has found an increasing number of patients seeking knee or hip surgery are finding they can’t have their operation on the NHS. Nearly 1,700 requests were rejected last year, a 45% increase from 2016-17.
  • Thousands of groin hernia patients left in pain and at risk of complications by NHS, warn surgeons

    17 Jul 2018 Thousands of predominately-male patients are being made to suffer in pain and, in rare cases, are at risk of death due to the NHS restricting access to groin (inguinal) hernia operations. In a report published today , the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Hernia Society have found that 57% of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) are denying patients quick access to the procedure. This is despite the fact that the only curative treatment for patients with a groin hernia is surgery.
